New Premier League season, who will be in the top six.
After a poor start last year Manchester United rallied towards the end of the season. However, it was common knowledge that new blood was desperately required. It comes as no surprise then, that Manchester United have been busy in the transfer window, signing talented youngster Memphis Depuy from PSV Eindhoven, Italian defender Matio Darmian, Argentinian Sergio Romero, midfield maestro Bastian Schweinsteiger and from Southampton Morgan Schneiderlin.
Louis van Gaal will be hoping he has put together a team strong enough to prize the title away from José Mourinho’s side.
With so much new blood in the side we may well be in for a slow start again for United but if Louis Van Gaal can work his magic I think they will be a tough side to beat come the latter stages of the season. A top four is most definitely on the cards but to win the title? – I am not so sure.
Another side looking for a top four finish is Liverpool after a poor season last year Brendan Rodgers has shored up his team by signing Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Nathaniel Clyne.
The Belgian Benteke is a prolific goalscorer and the prospect of him forming a lethal partnership with Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana is a distinct possibility. Benteke also gives Liverpool a strong physical presence upfront that will most certainly cause problems for opposing defenders. The rumoured departure of Balotelli could mean Brendan Rodgers team is a step closer to meeting his demanding work ethic, he expects every player to give 100% all of the time which is something Balotelli struggled with at times. Liverpool is now a much better side after their signings during the transfer window and are now strong favourites for a top four finish and a Champions League spot.
After Chelsea’s emphatic title victory last season there has not been a great deal of change, the only significant signings so far have been Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao and rumours surround John Stones as a potential further signing.
This is all signifies that José Mourinho is satisfied with his line up and you can expect more of the same from Chelsea. With a continued reliance on a tight defence which last season saw Chelsea manage an unmatched 17 clean sheets, they are odds-on to Concede the fewest number of Goals for the third successive year.
If Diego Costa can stay fit then you can expect him to be a strong contender for the Golden Boot especially if Hazzard continues his fantastic form.
No team has defended their title since Manchester united back in 2009 so the odds of José Mourinho retaining his title are against him but there is no doubt however, that they will be in the mix come the end of the season.
Expect a strong start to the season as Chelsea continue with their proven formula up to the point when their rivals have settled into the season with their new signings. The biggest early season threat therefore could be coming from another team that has been quiet during the transfer window, Arsenal.
Arsenal have undoubtedly gained an asset in Petr Cech but once again they look destined to be blighted by their own streaky nature, brilliant for a stretch and then let down badly by a poor run of form away from home.
Arsenal only lost two home games in the Premier League last season so the key to their success will lie in their away form.
Tottenham have not been out of the top six for the last six years but have only managed fourth on two occasions. This trend is looking like it will be repeated again this season but they will be hard pushed to cling onto that sixth spot this time.
Manchester city have signed Fabian Delph, Patrick Roberts, Raheem Sterling and Enes Unal but once again there biggest asset will continue to be Sergio Aguero. If Aguero stays fit and Sterling continues to mature and grow as a player then it is likely that City will continue to rule the roost in Manchester.
Its a long tough season ahead for all pretenders to the title and much can happen along the way to derail the best laid plans, so to predict the top six positions is a nigh on impossible task and not many like to stick their neck out before the season has even started, but here goes….
- Manchester City
- Manchester United
